30 years at Indiana School for the Deaf Began the ‘Mr. Athletics’ of the Indiana School for the Deaf … coached there 1931 to 1961 with a 229-391 record … his team won national championship for school for the deaf 1935 and ‘40 … started football, baseball and track programs at ISD, serving 38 years as athletic director … much-heralded for his work bringing deaf athletes into public focus … first winner of Joe Boland Award for his contribution to youth … a baseball star in high school, he got a late start in basketball … began playing the sport after graduating from Indianapolis Tech. He played on Butler’s national championship team in ‘29, played on 3 Southside Turners teams that won Indiana-Kentucky AAU championships.
