‘Shang’ a Powerhouse Center of Early Era
HIGH SCHOOL: Crawfordsville High School 1920
COLLEGE: Wabash 1925
Career began on a dubious note: after 2 years at New Richmond High School, moved to play 2 years with Crawfordsville. A suspension, however, kept the team from playing state schools, so a schedule was arranged with independent teams from all over the U.S. Despite the rugged schedule, team went 30-2. Earned 4 letters and a “mythical” national championship at Wabash College. “Shang” might have been a 2-sport standout, but wasn’t allowed to play football since his uncle had been killed in a Wabash game in 1910. After a year with the New York Celtics, played 6 years with Fort Wayne K of C professionals and 4 years with Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. Called by Celtic star Nat Holan “the best center in the country”. Deceased.
