Any high school basketball team that is undefeated and wins the state championship is automatically inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, as a team after 30 years. The Rough Riders of East Chicago Roosevelt became the second consecutive undefeated Indiana State Girls’ Basketball Champions on February 27, 1977. Six of the final “Sweet Sixteen,” and three of the final four went undefeated, but the outstanding shooting of Coach Bobbie DeKemper’s Roosevelt team carried them to the state title.

LaTaunya Pollard, sensational sophomore shooter, established a final game record of 36 points to lead the Rough Riders over Mount Vernon, 66-35. In her final game-record-breaking performance, she hit 16 of 29 from the field and added a perfect 4 for 4 from the free throw line.
