A 4-year athlete at tiny Berne High School led, his team to state tourney as a sophomore in 1935 …  undefeated team the next year … 2 more sectional titles … 3-year starter at IU … Hoosiers lost only 9 games in that span …  in ’40 won first NCAA championship … second-team all-Big 10 that season, all-Big 10 as a senior …  Look All-American … 3-year standout for IU baseball team, played every position but pitcher …  signed pro baseball contract with Brooklyn Dodgers … injury ended his baseball career and also hampered his brief pro basketball career … after World War II, he coached at Pendleton & Bluffton … named assistant athletic director at IU in ’57 … in ’73, became associate athletic director, then director of community relations.
