Dick Baker

Baker was a two-year starter for Hall of Fame coach Archie Chadd at Anderson. As a senior, he led the Indians to their first state title, upsetting an undefeated Jeffersonville team featuring Ernie Andres and Bill Johnson in the championship game. Anderson reached the finals with a thrilling 30-28 overtime win over Shelbyville, in which Baker hit buzzer-beaters at the end of regulation and OT. A three year starter at Ohio State, he led the Buckeyes to the Big Ten title as a senior in 1939. Reached the final game of the first ever NCAA tournament, won by Oregon State. His 26-point game against Wake Forest was for a time the NCAA record. He was named to a ten-man All-American team scheduled to tour Europe. He joined the accounting firm of Ernst and Ernst in 1940. He retired in 1977 as CEO of the firm, one of the world’s largest partnerships.
