A part of the Notre Dame University athletic tradition for over half a century – as a player, coach, and athletic administrator … a 3-sport standout in high school, captained all 3 teams … All-State football and basketball … led his team to 2 national Catholic basketball championships … 3-time All-American at Notre Dame as dominant center…2-time football All-American, also played baseball and track…played professional basketball while coaching at St. Mary’s College in Minnesota and Holy Cross College…returned to Notre Dame as assistant football and basketball coach…varsity basketball coach 6 seasons…athletic director in 1949, serving in that post 32 years…Notre Dame added 10 varsity sports in that period…inducted into Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1975.
