A multi-sport athlete that graduated from Linton H.S. in 1910, where he was captain of the state championship track team…earned 7 varsity letters at Purdue in football, basketball, baseball & track (first at school to letter in 4 major sports) & participated in swimming & wrestling…a consensus basketball All-American in 1914 & set numerous football records at Purdue…earned 11 varsity letters at West Point in football, basketball, baseball & track (first there to letter in 4 major sports) & participated in boxing, swimming & hockey…he was a 1915 basketball All-American & a 1916 & 1917 football All-American for Army…was selected as Indiana’s finest Amateur Athlete by the Helms Foundation in 1958 & was named to the 11-man FWAA Early-Day All-Time All-America Football Team in 1969 – the backs were Oliphant and Jim Thorpe.
