Harold “Babe” Wheeler

Leading scorer of 1922 state tourney…his Terre Haute Garfield team finished second to the Franklin ‘Wonder Five’…only 5-10, yet All-State center…3-year starter at Purdue…twice Big 10 champions team captain and all-conference in ’28…coached high school basketball 27 years, winning 17 sectionals…411-236 record…all but 2 of those seasons at Brazil where he also served as athletic director…his teams made it to Sweet 16 in ’34 and ’35…Wabash Valley Champs in 1943…spent 30 years officiating high school and college football games…28 years as a college basketball official and worked 8 years officiating in the National Basketball League.
