A fixture in Indianapolis sports journalism for over forty years, retiring from the Indianapolis News in 1991. He was a wrestler at Manual High School in 1938 and on Indiana University’s 1943 Big Ten championship team. He edited the Indiana Daily Student. After military service, he spent 17 years with the Indianapolis Times and 26 with the News. He covered six Olympics, ten major bowl games and events in 67 countries. His first love was high school sports. He covered 207 high school state finals in 19 sports, including 41 boys basketball finals. He received numerous writing and civic awards and was a member of Indianapolis’ first civil rights commission in 1952.
