2018 Womens Center Circle Officials Announced

2018 Women’s Center Circle Officials Award Winners Named

(NEW CASTLE) – The Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame recognizes one woman and one man for their contribution as high school girls basketball officials as the 2018 Women’s Center Circle Officials Award winners.

Kelly Dennis of Indianapolis and Terry Johnson, formerly of Indianapolis, will be acknowledged for their officiating careers.

Kelly Dennis is a 1979 graduate of Whiteland High School, where she was a four-year varsity basketball player, earning all-county honors twice.  She also participated in volleyball for four seasons and was a state finalist in the state meet in shot put as a participant in track and field.  She participated in four sports – basketball, field hockey, softball and track – at Franklin College, where she graduated in 1983.  She worked 10 sectionals, eight regionals, three semi-states, the 2004 IHSAA girls state finals, three Hall of Fame Classics, six Indiana-Kentucky All-Star games and the 2011 WBCA High School All-American game in her high school officiating career and was the recipient of the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association’s Mildred Ball Award in 2011. She has been a member of the Indiana Officials Association for more than 20 years. She remains an active college official, working NCAA Division I, II and III and NAIA contests.  Among countless college assignments, she has worked the NCAA Division II National Championship game, NCAA Division III Final Four, NAIA National Tournament, and conference tournaments in Division I Mid-American Conference, Horizon League and Missouri Valley Conference, as well as the GLVC, Crossroads and Heartland conferences. 

For 27 years, she has been the owner of Progressive Lawnscaping in Beech Grove and for the past 10 years has also been owner of Go-Green Gardening, an online gardening and lawnscaping retailer.  She resides in Indianapolis.

William “Terry” Johnson is a graduate of Eastern Hancock High School, where he lettered in basketball, baseball, cross country and track, earning all-county and all-conference honors on the hardwood.  A longtime contributor as a basketball official, he worked 28 sectionals, 21 regionals, 13 semi-states, two girls state finals (1999 and 2002) and the 2002 boys state finals.  In addition, he worked the 1990 and 1994 Hall of Fame Classic, the 1998 Girls Tournament of Champions and numerous other high school tournaments throughout his career.  He was active in the Indiana Officials Association and Fall Creek Officials Association during his career.

Married to the former Margaret “Marjie” Mayer, they were the parents of six children and resided in Indianapolis.  Retired from a career at Eli Lilly & Company, they now reside in Cape Coral, Florida.

Center Circle Officials Award winners will be honored at the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame’s 17th Annual Women’s Awards Banquet on Saturday, April 28, 2018.
