Indiana Basketball History Magazine – Summer 2015

Despite having produced two eventual Evansville College Hall-of-Famers in Gus Doerner and Harold Brown, the Mackey Aces had never won a sectional title. Located seven miles south of Oakland City in Gibson County, Mackey always had to contend with the big boys of Princeton and Owensville in the quest for that sectional championship. 

Hopes were bright, though, going into the 1945-46 season, as the previous year the Aces had reached the sectional semi-finals and they returned several letterman.  The end of World War II had everyone all over the country thinking about the future, the survivors who left the cities, small towns and farms as boys were coming home as men. One man coming home to Mackey would play an important role later in the season.
