A 4-yr starter at Thorntown High School…in 1915 scored 19 points in school’s 35-10 state championship victory over Montmorenci …All-State …averaged over 20 points a game in his high school career…began his career as a guard, but at 6-2 1/2 ended up at center…shot all of team’s free throws…at Purdue, started as a sophomore, shooting all foul shots…helped Boilers to second place in Big 10…World War I interrupted the program by taking away Coach ‘Piggy’ Lambert…said Smith, ‘Basketball became of minor importance during the war years’…coached 2 years at Lebanon and 3 years in Belvedere, Ill before moving into highly successful business career.
