A three-year All-Conference guard from 1952 through 1954 at South Bend Central, playing for Hall of Fame coach Elmer McCall . . . as a junior, was the MVP on the Bears’ first state championship team which nipped a great Terre Haute Gerstmeyer team 42-41 for the title . . . named All-State that year and Dell Magazine named him to its All-American squad . . . high school career ended in a regional loss to Elkhart as a senior . . . he went on to two-sport stardom at Ventura College in California . . . in addition to being team MVP and a two-time All-Conference selection in basketball, he set the school long jump record with a leap of 23’11” . . . returned to South Bend continuing to play independent and semi-pro ball.
