Graduated from Indianapolis Shortridge at the turn of the 1900s and went on to a historic, pioneering role as a coach at institutions including Crawfordsville High School, Wabash College, Purdue University and the University of Illinois…as a junior, he organized the first high school basketball team at Shortridge in 1899…captured four Big Ten titles in 11 years, coached five Big Ten scoring leaders…from 1905-1920 record of 195-50, coached nine All-Americans…fourĀ  undefeated teams and was Illinois Helms’ national champ in 1915…was coach of 1932 NFL champion Chicago Bears…noteworthy is the positive influence on students who went on to significant coaching careers: Ward Lambert, Pete Vaughan, George Halas, Tug Wilson, Everett Case and Burt Ingwersen (Illinois).
