Played varsity basketball and golf at White Plains, NY … varsity golf at Purdue … all-campus golf champion… came to Hammond High School in ’43 to coach basketball, golf and swimming … in 16 seasons as varsity basketball coach, his teams won 69 percent of their games, 277-125, amid rugged northwest Indiana competition … 10 sectional championships … his teams were nearly unbeatable at the Hammond Civic Center, winning 80 percent of home games … coached Hammond to the ’43 state swimming championship … continued to teach at Hammond after retiring from coaching in ’59 … known as a disciplinarian, but also for the rapport he developed with his players and the impact he had on their lives.
