Hoosiers Creators Headed for IBHOF

November 27, 2012

The Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame announces that David Anspaugh and Angelo Pizzo, creators of the movie -Hoosiers-, will be inducted in 2013 as recipients of the St.Vincent Health Silver Medal.

The duo combined to create the 1986 film, which has been rated as the #1 sports movie of all-time by multiple outlets, including USA Today, and is widely regarded as one of the top movies of any genre by critics, including the American Film Institute.  In 2001, it was selected for preservation by the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being -culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.-

-Hoosiers- captures Indiana-s passion for high school basketball through the fictional 1952 Hickory Huskers and is based loosely upon the story of the 1954 state champion Milan Indians. Adding to its authenticity, scenes from the movie were filmed throughout Indiana and numerous Indiana basketball players and legends make on-screen contributions.

Anspaugh, a native of Decatur, Indiana, was director of the film, while Pizzo, from Bloomington, was screenwriter and producer.  Following -Hoosiers-, the duo also combined on another sports classic, -Rudy-.

The St.Vincent Silver Medal is given in recognition of contributions to Indiana high school basketball other than as an Indiana high school basketball player or coach. Recognizing the magnitude of -Hoosiers-, this is the first time the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame has given multiple awards in the same year.

Previous recipients of the Silver Medal include college coaches such as Bob Knight, Gene Keady, Tony Hinkle, Arad McCutcheon and Angus Nicoson, media members of the likes of Tom Carnegie, Hilliard Gates and Herb Schwomeyer and administrators including Arthur Trester, Phil Eskew and L.V. Phillips.

Anspaugh and Pizzo will be recognized and inducted at the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame-s 52ndannual Mens- Awards Banquet on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 with a midday reception at the organization-s New Castle museum and evening ceremonies at Primo Banquet Hall in Indianapolis.

Tickets will be made available in early 2013.  Call the Hall at 765-529-1891 for more information or email [email protected].

St.Vincent Health, sponsor of the Silver Medal, is a member of Ascension Health, the nation-s largest not-for-profit Catholic Healthcare System. Their hospital system is Indiana-s largest healthcare employer, with 20 health ministries serving 47 counties in central and southern Indiana.
